English translation

It is told that ghosts were to be found in a certain farm in M parish; the farm stood uninhabited for several years and no one wanted to buy it. Then I came to buy it for a low price and moved there. The first night I lay there, there was a noise in the attic at 11 o'clock at night. My wife became so scared by the rattling. I dressed myself, took the lantern and an axe, and went up to the attic to strike the ghost dead. Instead, I saw a cat that ran back and forth on some planks that were unstable. That was the ghost. For my part, I have no belief in witchcraft and ghosts. There are certain people who are very nervous and superstitious, just as there are people who are very frugal and have good calculations. That is the foundation of wealth; such people still exist today. Then there are bad people who exploit and burden decent folk.
