Every dated entry in the archive laid out in the order it happened — an uprising in 1564, seventy-one beheadings in 1675, rockets over the inland in 1946, lights over the suburbs from the 1980s on, and between them the folk memory records collected door to door in the years before the last war. Read downward and the patterns come up on their own.
