A field guide to a county

Why West Northland?

Pine forest and dark water in Västernorrland
The forest at the edge of the water

I grew up in Västernorrland. It is the place I return to whenever I can — the county of dark water, tall timber and long silences, where the rivers run down from the inland and the sea waits at the coast.

Since then I have travelled the world and lived in countries on most continents. I have seen deserts, mountains, megacities and tropical coasts. And still, every time I come back, Västernorrland feels different from anywhere else.

There is something mystical about this county. Something appealing, dark and fascinating. The forests are older than the roads. The water moves slowly and remembers. The light in summer is endless; the dark in winter is longer than most people are told.

West Northland is my attempt to gather the stories that belong here: the sightings, the hauntings, the strange places and the events that do not quite fit ordinary explanation. Some are documented history. Some are folklore that has lived in the valleys for centuries. Some are reports from ordinary people who saw something they could not account for.

This site is not a debunking project and it is not a belief system. It is a map of fascination. A place for the county's mysteries to exist together — factual, legendary, and everything in between.

Because Västernorrland is not just beautiful. It is watching and waiting.
