The following events are said, according to legends, to have long ago taken place in a parish bordering Attmar: There was once a girl who loved a man. And that is well and good, provided the love is reciprocated. But in this case, it was not so. The reason for this was their difference in social standing. For she was merely a poor crofter's daughter, while he, on the other hand, was a rich farmer's son. And a union between such people was formerly considered a crime. However, the girl was beautiful as the day, which the farmer's son was not blind to. But he could not propose to her due to the reasons mentioned. She, for her part, had resolved to win him, despite all obstacles. And to achieve this goal of hers, she stopped at nothing. Now she had heard that if one, on a Midsummer's Eve at twelve o'clock, went to a crossroads located to the east and west, one would meet the evil one. And since she knew of such a place, she went there on a Midsummer's Eve to hear if the evil one would take up her cause. That is, so she could get the desired one. When the last stroke of midnight had faded, a dark-skinned gentleman came up to her where she stood. He greeted her and asked how it came to be that she was at this place at this time of day. She told him the reason and received the message that he would help her, provided she agreed to his conditions. But when she heard the condition, which was that the evil one demanded her first-born son on his confirmation day, she declined. As she stood firm in her decision, the evil one intended to leave, when a thought went through her head that she was foolish. She didn't even know if she would have a son, and so she gave in. The result was that the girl got her beloved, and the marriage was also happy. When they had been married for a year, she gave birth to a son, and with that, her peace was gone. Until then, she had not thought of her promise to the evil one, but now she was reminded of it daily through her son. And as the years went by, her anxiety and fear increased. Then the boy's confirmation approached, and not a day passed that she did not cry her eyes red. Finally, she could not keep the matter secret from the boy, which he took hard. Sometime before his confirmation, however, he went to the priest and told him of his distress and asked for help. The priest promised this and instructed the boy to come to him before the hour on the night before the confirmation day, which the boy did. The priest now took the boy with him to the church, where he placed him in the altar rail with an open Bible in his hand and said that the boy should stand there until three o'clock in the morning. Furthermore, the boy should remain silent, and whoever came, he should only hold out the Bible. After these admonitions, the priest left. The boy did not have to wait long before the church door opened wide, and in stepped the priest, dressed in his festive attire. However, it was the evil one in the guise of the priest. He barely entered before greeting and began to coax the boy, who silently held out the Bible to him when he came close to the boy, whereupon he vanished. The same happened with some other beings, in whose guises the evil one pretended to be. However, the boy passed the test and after three o'clock could go home with the message of victory over the evil one.
