In a village belonging to Stöde, many decades ago on an autumn evening, there was an invitation ball, to which, among others, some girls were invited. The girls lived in a neighboring village, which was half a Swedish mile from the ball venue. The road they had to take went through a forest. At one spot there, according to legend, a man had been killed and "walked again." However, the evening in question was moonlit, and when the girls came near the haunted spot, one of them saw a man walking towards them on the road. He was walking on the same side as the girls and seemed peculiar in some way. What caused this, she would soon find out. For after having walked a short distance, she realized that the man was headless. That the girl became scared was natural. To avoid meeting him, she moved to the other side of the road, and she also wanted her companion to join her. But since her companion did not see the man and was not informed of the matter, she resisted this. Nevertheless, the girl was stubborn and did not give up until her companion had come over to her side. And at the same time, the man passed by. When the girls went home from the ball in the morning and came to the farm where the man had lived, they heard a terrible noise in the barn. Judging by the din, the girls thought a cow had gotten loose, so they decided to go there and remedy the situation. But when the girl who had seen the headless man in the forest opened the gate to the barn's entrance, she saw the same man come out of the barn, where it now became quiet. At this sight, the girl slammed the gate shut and hurried away. The other girl did not see him this time either. And she was not a little surprised that her companion did not utter a word on the way home. Only long afterwards did she tell her friend about what she had seen.

I en by hörande till Stöde var en höstkväll för många decenier sedan, en bjudningsbal, dit bl.a. några flickor voro inbjudna. Flickorna bodde i en grannby, som låg en halv mil från balstället. Den väg, som de hade att gå, gick genom en skog. På ett ställe där hade enligt sägnen en man bragts om livet och "gick igen." Kvällen ifråga var emellertid månljust och när flickorna kommit i närheten av spökplatsen, såg den ena av dem en man komma gående mot sig på vägen. Han gick på samma sida som flickorna och verkade besynnerlig på något sätt. Vad detta kom av, skulle hon få se snart. Ty efter att ha fått en liten bit blev hon varse, att mannen var huvudlös. Att flickan blev rädd, var naturlig sak. För att slippa möta honom gick hon på andra av vägen, att hon även ville ha sin kamrat. Men eftersom denna ej såg mannen och ej heller underrättades om saken, motsate hon sig detta. Emellertid var flickan envis och gav sig inte, förrän kamraten kommit över på hennes sida. Och samtidigt passerade mannen förbi. När flickorna på morgonsidan gingo hem från balen och kommo till den gården, där mannen haft sitt hem, fingo de höra ett fasligt oväsen i ladugården. Av oljudet att dömma trodde flickorna att någon ko kommit loss, varför de beslöto sig för att gå dit och avhjälpa saken. Men då flickan, som sett den huvudlösa mannen på skogen, öppnade porten till ladugårdssvalen, såg hon samma karl komma ut ur ladugården, där det nu blev tyst. Vid denna syn slog flickan igen porten och skyndade därifrån. Den andra flickan såg honom ej heller denna gång. Och hon var ej så litet förvånad över, att henneskamrat ej yttrade ett ord under hemvägen. Först långt efteråt omtalade hon sin syn för vänninnan.
