It was a common belief that a rifle could be ruined. With such a rifle, the hunter could not kill the game, no matter how skilled a shot he was. Either the shot would not hit, or it would not kill the game, no matter how many shots one fired at it. A simple way to ruin a rifle was to smear a little soap in the muzzle: then it became worthless and would not kill. As a rule, however, magical means were required to ruin a firearm, means that were kept very secret, and which few knew about. It was mostly sorcerers and envious and malicious people who could ruin rifles. Mere envy could adversely affect hunting success.

Allman var tron, att geväret kunde förgöras. Med ett dylikt gevär kunde skytten ej döda villebrådet, hur duktig skytt han än var. Antingen träffade icke skottet, eller också dödade det ej villebrådet, hjälpte icke hur många skott man sköt på det.Ett enkelt sätt att förgöra ett gevär, var att stryka litet såpa i mynningen: då blev det skämt och dödade inte.I regel fordrades det dock magiska medel för att förgöra ett skjutvapen, medel som höllos mycket hemliga, och som få kände till. Det var mest trollgubbar och avundsjuka och elaka människor, som kunde förgöra gevär. Blotta avundsjukan kunde menligt inverka på jaktlyckan.
