English translation

Where we lived: Svedje, there were mischievous spirits and strange things in many ways. That was largely why I sold the homestead after my husband's death. One summer evening, my husband had allowed the young people to be in the barn and dance for a while. We lived in the brew-house, which was built together with the woodshed. After the young people had left, there was a horrible racket in the woodshed. It sounded as if a horse had been lying there, kicking in the shavings and debris. We clearly heard how splinters flew around the walls and against the ceiling. The racket was at times so strong that the cottage shook. My husband went out into the woodshed three different times with the lantern and shone it, searching all around the walls, but he could not discover the slightest cause for the noise. Only far into the night did it become quiet. Last of all, it sounded as if a very large, heavy animal had gone out of the woodshed and past the cottage bridge, up over the hill. It stomped so that the ground shook. What this was, I do not know, but it was certainly nothing natural.
