English translation

In a village within Attmar, one autumn many years ago, there was an invitation ball, and among many others, three girls were invited. The girls lived in the same village and had about half a mile to the ball venue, and since there was no car and hardly even a bicycle at that time, they had to travel the distance on foot. However, the evening of the ball was moonlit, which illuminated the predominantly forest-clad path the girls had to take. When they had gone a little way, one of them saw a strange animal walking nearby. The animal was black and had too large a head in proportion to its body. Its legs were short, and its rump was no longer than a couple of inches. After looking at her a few times with its piercing eyes, the animal disappeared. But to say that the girl became scared is an understatement. She felt a panicked terror shoot through her being: she wanted to scream but couldn't, for her tongue was as if locked to her palate. Her legs could barely carry her, and so she slowed down and fell behind her companions. The ball, previously so alluring, no longer tempted her. Now the other girls stopped and waited for her, wondering what was wrong since she was so pale. By then, she had regained the use of her tongue but did not tell them what she had seen. Instead, she stated that she had to go home for some reason. This was not accepted by the girls, who each took her by an arm and, in this way, forced her to come along. After a while, the animal reappeared before the girl; this time, it walked in front of her. She was seized by a paralyzing fear that threatened to choke her that time the animal turned its head, and she met its eyes burning with anger. When the animal disappeared after a moment, the girl said, almost weeping, that they must let her go home, otherwise an accident would befall her. For she suspected that something would happen to her if she went to the ball. The girls now gave in, but despite their questioning, they did not learn the reason for her return home. So she turned back and began the journey towards her home with trepidation. And when she passed the place where she had first seen the animal, she was so scared that she alternately froze and sweated. Nevertheless, she reached her home without seeing the animal, but for a long time, that sight kept her from going to balls.
