It was at Nils Gullik's farm in Backen in the late 1840s. An unmarried brother of Nils died, and after him, mischievous spirits appeared there. He walked again, but no one saw him except a small son of Nils. The boy was also named Nils. Little Nils came in several times and told how he saw his deceased uncle out in the yard, where he fell over, because he only had one leg. It was believed that someone had taken the dead man's leg before he was transported to his grave. They used to, at that time, use dead men's bones for witchcraft purposes. Everywhere, that boy was followed by mischief, and no one could explain what was happening. All the flatbread in the pantry was once crumbled into small pieces. Another time, they had relatives visiting for Christmas. On the stove stood a frying pan full of pork. It was moved by something invisible and overturned into the lap of one of the visiting womenfolk. When they had fed the livestock, one had to stand there and guard, otherwise the food would be taken from them. However, these hauntings only occurred between 10 AM and 1 PM. They had brought both deans and priests there to read away the hauntings, but they could accomplish nothing. The spirits leafed through the books for them, so there was no order to their reading. Finally, they sent their closest neighbor, Per Olsson in Backen, to a wise man in Jämtland. He lived in Källåsen and was therefore called the Källås man. When Per arrived there, he was very well received, and he didn't need to state his errand. The Källås man knew his errand, even mentioning a couple of small mishaps Per had experienced on his journey, and it was accurate to a T. The wise man prepared a batch that Per was to take home and use according to instructions. “But,” said the old man, “it's not certain that I can handle them; it might well be that I'll have to come home to you for a while later.” Well, the hauntings at the farm ceased after this, but instead, Nils Gullik himself became mortally ill. He swelled so much that he was about to die. Then Per Olsson had to go to the Källås man a second time, and now he came along to Backen. First, he ordered them to stone up their excellent well, and they did, and the well is still like that today. It was supposedly because some part of the deceased's body had been dropped into the well. Well, Nils recovered, and everything seemed fine. However, the Källås man was in a hurry to leave. But in Järkvissle, he was held back. It was about some stolen goods that he was to “point out.” When he left there, he said that it was not certain he would come home alive, for he had delayed too long, but if he only got beyond the county border, he would be saved. However, he did not get further than a hill here in Boda. There he died stone dead in the sleigh.
